Background
As part of the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management (NPS-FM)(external link) all regional councils are required to identify water bodies of an appropriate scale for managing water, and set freshwater objectives and limits.
Taranaki rivers, streams, lakes and wetlands are unique with their own characteristics and pressures. To better understand and manage these complexities, the region has been divided into six units – each with their own challenges and opportunities, and each requiring purposed-designed solutions. We call these Freshwater Management Units (FMUs).
To help you understand each FMU and share your views, we've created storymap pages which provide a wealth of information on each of the six units.
Click on the links below to take you to the FMU homepage and the storymap pages for the six FMUs. The proposed units are subject to input from tangata whenua and the wider community and amendments to their shape, size or make-up may be made based on your feedback.
