All discharges of treated farm dairy effluent require a resource consent.

Discharging effluent to land is regarded as best practice and farmers renewing their effluent consents are already, in most cases, required to move towards land disposal. There is also strong industry support for land-based systems.

Requirements & guidelines

To discharge farm dairy effluent to land, resource consent conditions now require the installation of adequate storage for farm dairy effluent, with the system design and storage volume determined by a suitably qualified person.
