term Room 3 students (teacher Catherine Steenson with yrs 3-5) have been exploring the Enviroschools theme area of Energy. With additional funding support, students have led a range of investigations and have written reports, invited an energy expert from Powerco to give a presentation, held workshops constructing various machines that use wind and solar energy as power sources, and explored how the theory of electricity works to make working electrical circuits. Catherine is really keen to use
Taranaki’s temperature trends. Sunshine hours and wind speeds in North Taranaki have increased, while winter rainfall has decreased and severe weather events have become fewer and less intense. South Taranaki has seen an increase in spring rainfall. The Committee was told that the Resource Management Act explicitly excludes the Council from climate change regulation, but future likely consequences, particularly for rainfall, are being factored into plans and projects, most notably the recent upgrades to

areas on site are predominantly gravel, and therefore any sandblasting material spilt or deposited on site
from aerial emissions is difficult to manage, and may be re-suspended by wind or vehicle movements. A
substantial area of the yard near the offices at the Rifle Range Road end of the site was sealed during the
2002-2003 monitoring period.
The containment of emissions from yard and mobile blasting is limited to the use of screens,

1.2 Process description
The site is a mixed sheep, beef and dairy hold-over farm located North West of Patea (Figure 1). The south-
western boundary of the farm runs along the edge of the sea cliffs (Figure 2). The land adjacent to the cliff
has a high sand content and is prone to scouring and erosion from the high winds experienced in the area.
