Community feedback was sought in the four key areas identified below. In addition to these focus areas,
respondents had the opportunity to provide feedback on any other issues of importance to them.
• Road safety and speed management.
• Long-term vision for transport in Taranaki.
• Public transport (including buses and rail).
• Cycling, walking and active travel.
Total
provide this through targeted public transport rates,
while Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency provides
taxpayer-funded support. Together these meet
about 60% of the cost of these services, with bus
fares covering the rest. Clearly, any increase in
coverage and/or frequency of services will impact
on rates.
It’s worth noting, too, that the size and number of
buses in the current fleet is tailored to maximum
school-bus demand. Using smaller, more fuel-
efficient buses on suburban worker/shopper
the users of this service that have health conditions have opted to use the
services as opposed to buses in the height of the COVID-19 pandemic for increased
safety.
6.2 The Committee noted that positive feedback has been received from users of the
Hāwera to New Plymouth Service.
Resolved
That the Taranaki Regional Transport Committee:
a) receives the memorandum Public Transport Operational Report for the Quarter
Ending 31 December 2021.
