statements.
4.3 In general, all of these neighbours stated that they were ‘not complaining’
people. In addition, they stated that in their opinion there was no point
making complaints as this would not result in the farm closing earlier and
it was best to just put up with the smell until the farm closed.
4.4 Some consider that due to the delay in time it takes Council to respond to
complaints (and prevalence of wind direction changes) that complaints
may not be verified and therefore there
Meteorological conditions
26 Weather conditions, in particular wind speed and direction and atmospheric
stability, can influence the dispersion of contaminant emissions and their
potential to impact on air quality.
27 Weather conditions are measured nearby at the New Plymouth AWS
weather station at New Plymouth Airport, 1.9 km to the north-northeast of
the site. Given the proximity of this weather station, it should provide a
reasonable indication of overlying wind flows in the

1.7 I have not visited the site of the poultry farm but would be willing to do so
if permission was given prior to giving evidence. I would also visit the
neighbouring properties if possible. I am familiar with the general area due
to the location on Airport Drive and viewed the site and nearby properties
from the roadside on 16 December 2021. There was a strong wind from
the west at the time and no odour was expected or detected on Airport
Drive.

Heavy persistent rain and strong winds have proceeded the inspection. The stormwater system was working
well, with all stormwater being collected and directed for treatment prior to discharge from site. The site

The topography of the area can influence localised wind and air flow patterns and therefore the
dispersion of odour emitted from a site.

1.2 Process description
The site is a mixed sheep, beef and dairy hold-over farm located North West of Patea (Figure 1). The south-
western boundary of the farm runs along the edge of the sea cliffs (Figure 2). The land adjacent to the cliff
has a high sand content and is prone to scouring and erosion from the high winds experienced in the area.
