country, wetlands have been drained to make way for farming
and urban development. Remaining wetlands have also
suffered continued degradation from invasive plants,
introduced animals and contaminants from surrounding land
use.
Today, Taranaki has an estimated 1,200-plus wetlands. The
Taranaki Regional Council has previously identified 76 of these
as Regionally Significant Wetlands because of their size or

The focus for this newsletter is the highly successful Taranaki self-help possum
control programme. It examines why it was introduced, its success and how it
is managed by land occupiers with the support of the Taranaki Regional Council.
Science and Technology Fair awards
In this year’s Science and Technology Fair, the Council first prize was awarded to
Sam Parker (Waitara High School) for his exhibit titled ‘Shaken Not Stirred’ with
Alesha Williams (Highlands
located on Lower Ball Road at
Kakaramea (Vanner Landfarm), in the Mangaroa catchment. Disposal activities commenced
at this site during the 2012-2013 monitoring year. This report for the 2012-2013 period
describes the monitoring programme implemented by the Taranaki Regional Council to
assess the Company’s environmental performance during the period under review, and the
results and environmental effects of the Company’s activities.
The Company holds one resource consent, which includes a

further clarification is required.
PART I – Introduction
Scope of the Requirements
1 This Appendix provides a method of calculating
acceptable chimney heights for discharges of the
products of combustion from industrial or trade
premises. It also includes an overview of basic
boiler management.
2 The Appendix is in two parts. Part I provides an
introduction to the appendix by
preventing or minimising adverse effects on the
environment from emissions to air from pig farming. It
also provides a general indication of the matters that
the regional council may consider and the nature of
the conditions that might be attached to a resource
consent for the discharge of contaminants into the air
from piggeries (refer rules 47 to 50).
Applicants and resource consent holders will also be
expected to demonstrate that they are giving effect to
