for animal welfare—we don’t lose stock into
waterways now,” says Robin. “And with the smaller waterways
fenced, they don’t get clogged up and we don’t have to
spend time clearing them.”
All in all, the Blackwells have fenced 14.4 kilometres of
streambank and planted 4.27 kilometres in native plants.
They’ve also put in native plants around the fringes of small
wetlands and ponds, and on banks prone to soil erosion.
On steeper slopes, they have retained 21 hectares of native
present. The site is likely to contain other notable species
such as the banded kokopu and notable native reptiles and invertebrates.
Ecological Values
Sustainability - Positive Key ecological processes still influence the site and with
appropriate management, it can remain resilient to existing or
potential threats and will mature over time to provide increased
biodiversity and ecological function.
Ecological context - High This site provides additional
the proposed options and provide
more information to the public about options between $6million and $55million.
All options (excluding Option 1) include a permanent capacity of 20,000+; Sport Taranaki does not support this
scale of stadium for Taranaki. The BERL Report clearly states that the only times capacity over 15,000 is
required is for All Blacks matches once every 3 years and a NPC semi-final in 2014. We believe this additional
capacity could be met with temporary
Medium This site provides additional habitat and greater connectivity
within the local landscape and lies within close proximity to other

General description
Nowell’s Lakes and environs have a combined area of 10.4 ha. They are
located adjacent to each other in coastal dune land. The lakes have highly
modified margins but have been well replanted with flaxland and reedland
species. An overland drainage pipe, which controls the lake level at times of
flooding, extends from one of the lakes to the coast. The lakes provide an
important link between the coast and land for coastal bird life.

Other Management Issues
Weeds - Low The site has few problem pest plants. Gorse and pampas are a
problem encroaching onto access tracks.
Predators - High Predators including rodents, mustelids, possums, feral cats and
hedgehogs will be having an impact on native species at the site.
Pest animal control at the site is coordinated by the
