We all love a unique pet, but did you know some escaped pets pose a major threat to our native animals, plants and ecosystems? Several pet species have gone on to form wild populations in New Zealand, including goldfish, galahs, rosellas and cockatoos. In Taranaki we occasionally get reports of pets where they shouldn’t be. One of the most memorable was the Australian eastern water dragon that lived near New Plymouth’s Herekawe Stream for at least 18 months. By luck one of our officers was

2. Consents and Regulatory …
Environmental Standards for Freshwater 2020 (NES-FW) as part of the Government’s Essential Freshwater reforms and came into effect on 3 September 2020. The regulations are temporary and apply until 1 January 2025, or when the Council notifies its proposed Land and Freshwater Plan (whichever date is earliest). A resource consent is required if you want to undertake any of the following activities: Converting more than 10ha of land to more intensive land use
Increase the area of land used for dairy support
Give the gift of biodiversity this Christmas – get a $10 rat-trap and box from a New Plymouth pop-up shop. The Towards Predator-Free Taranaki pop up shop is on the corner of Devon St and Liardet Street. Here's the report card for the “Can I Swim Here?” monitoring programme for the 2023/24 season. From November to March each year the Council tests water quality at least weekly at 41 popular swimming spots.
