Iwi Liaison
The intrinsic relationship that tangata whenua have with the natural environment and the
role and responsibilities associated with Kaitiakitanga, are a clear indication that the iwi and
hapu of Taranaki have an important role in a marine oil spill response. The coastal marine

Where we live
Tangata whenua
There are eight recognised iwi within the boundaries
of the Taranaki region. Four of these have completed
Treaty of Waitangi settlements. They are Ngāti Tama,
Ngāti Ruanui, and Ngaa Rauru whose settlements
were all legislated in 2003, and Ngāti Mutunga
whose settlement legislation was passed through
Parliament in 2006. At the time of writing, Te Atiawa
and Ngāruahine iwi have initialled their respective
deeds of settlement
among other things, taking into account the Treaty of Waitangi.
Furthermore, schedule 10 of the Local Government Act 2002 requires the Council to set out any steps that the
Council intends to take to foster the development of Māori capacity to contribute to the decision making
processes of the Council. There are eight recognised iwi in the region.
To achieve these objectives the Council intends to undertake the following:

The Taranaki Regional Council has established 3 Iwi positions on The

them a vote on their committees but not a vote on the full regional council.

The role of Māori and iwi
We’ve embarked on a new approach in how we

The freshwater reforms give tangata whenua a
greater role in freshwater management by
