Executive summary
Taranaki has a very dense drainage network, the natural consequence of its frequent and
plentiful rainfall and of gravity’s effects upon water driving it downhill to the sea. Stream
flows become the habitat of freshwater ecology and gain value for their in-stream uses and

[9] The Sounds Plan, which became operative on 28 February 2003 is a
combined district, regional and regional coastal plan. Relevant provisions of the
Sounds Plan were reviewed by the Environment Court in its judgment, which

Year to date rainfall ranges from 11% more rainfall at Waitotara at Hawken Rd, and 78% more rainfall at Whanganui at Mataimona Trig, with an average of 36% more than normal.
