Nominations are now open for the 30th Taranaki Regional Council Environmental Awards, which feature revamped categories that better reflect what matters to people across the region.
The annual awards aim to honour super-powered initiatives within our region that contribute significantly to protecting and enhancing the Taranaki environment.
Changes include the addition of new categories such as Youth Environmental Leader, Environmental Action in Water Quality Improvement and Environmental Action in Biodiversity, as well as the realignment of others, such as Environmental Leadership in Farming.
Council Communications and Engagement Manager Jose Reader says it is fitting that for the 30th anniversary of the awards tweaks were made to simplify the process and align the categories with the Council’s environmental objectives for the region.
"We're thrilled to unveil the updated award categories, which provide space to recognise the environmental champions driving vital change in areas like climate action and improving water quality,” she says.
The 2022 awards saw a number of high-calibre initiatives celebrated, including the ongoing restoration of the Waiwhakaiho Awa, zero waste events, wool water filters and a project to prevent the decline in kiwi numbers in Taranaki – among others.
Council Chair Charlotte Littlewood says that each year the Council receives innovative and inspiring entries from all around the region and it is always exciting to acknowledge and celebrate the selfless achievements of a diverse range of entrants.
“The awards are pivotal in recognising those who are ground-breaking in their efforts to build sustainable communities, reduce carbon emissions, improve native biodiversity and protect our precious waterways.
We’re excited to celebrate these environmental heroes and all their hard mahi.”
Nominations close on 10 September, with the awards presented at a formal event in November.
