Pukeiti invites visitors to step into the world of art that reflects the complexities of youth, multiculturalism, feminism, LGBTQI+, mental health and environmental issues we face.
The second installment of Yours Truly XX will take over Pukeiti’s Rātā Room from 10 to 20 January. The exhibition includes artists from across Aotearoa who were asked to show their ‘true selves’ and share what makes them unique.
Curated by Laura Campbell, the exhibition offers a glimpse into the artists’ journeys, each piece reflecting their experiences and struggles in a raw and honest way.
"This exhibition allows visitors to engage with powerful personal stories. Each piece speaks honestly about the artist's experiences, inviting reflection on shared human struggles and triumphs," says Laura.
Among the artists participating are locals Fern Petrie and Renate Verbrugge, who bring their unique perspectives and experiences to the exhibition.
For Fern, Yours Truly XX is about finding strength in life’s challenges and approaching change with optimism. Her painting, ‘Remember Me’, reflects her experiences of motherhood, personal struggles and growth.
"Being part of this exhibition has been a healing experience. Art as therapy has always held true to me and through reworking my painting, I’ve worked through a traumatic experience and let it walk beside me in paint."
Stone sculptor Renate says her piece, 'Balancing Act,' reflects her multicultural identity, the journey of belonging and the complexities of identity within New Zealand society.
"I was honoured to be asked to participate in the exhibition. The female form in my sculpture, made from Belgian blue stone, stands in a stone boat made from Taranaki andesite. It is a true representation of my multicultural roots, Belgian and Taranaki."
Renate is excited for this installment of Yours Truly XX to be held at Pukeiti, a world-renowned garden and rainforest owned and operated by Taranaki Regional Council.
“Pukeiti attracts a diverse range of visitors, unlike a typical art gallery. This presents a unique opportunity to engage a different audience and spark an interest in art among people who may not usually consider themselves art lovers. Pukeiti’s welcoming environment creates a more accessible space compared to the sometimes intimidating atmosphere of galleries.”
The opening night of Yours Truly XX will be held on 10 January from 6pm to 8pm and is a free event open to the public. The exhibition will be on display at the Rātā Room at Pukeiti, 2290 Carrington Road, New Plymouth from 10 to 20 January, with free entry for all visitors.
