4.2 Kaitiakitanga
Two hapū and two iwi have an association with the Paritūtū site. It is a shared interest area between
Taranaki Iwi and Te Atiawa; Ngāti Tairi Hapū (Taranaki), Ngā Mahanga, and Ngāti Te Whiti Hapū (Te
Atiawa) and both have associations with the Paritūtū site. It is understood urupā are located on the
property, which was also a papakāinga (settlement) and a battle ground. The site also sits within a
broader cultural landscape of significance

The Council is also confident about its plans to build on recent gains in freshwater quality; to develop its

occurred under the emergency works provisions of the Resource Management Act 1991 after all other
options had been considered. Since then, the shellfish monitoring programme has been revised in
consultation with STDC and iwi to better understand the effects of the discharge. Furthermore, the renewed
discharge consent now includes emergency discharge provisions to improve how these events are managed
in the future.
For reference, in the 2017-2018 year, consent holders were found to achieve a

Iwi considerations
33. This memorandum and the associated recommendations are consistent with the
Council’s policy for the development of Māori capacity to contribute to decision-making
processes (schedule 10 of the Local Government Act 2002) as outlined in the adopted long-
term plan and/or annual plan. Similarly, iwi involvement in adopted work
programmes has been recognised in the preparation of this memorandum.
