7. Freshwater Monitoring by Iwi
7.1 Ms K Blakemore, Technical Officer, spoke to the memorandum informing the
Committee of freshwater monitoring by Ngaa Rauru Kiitahi iwi and hapu of streams
and rivers within their rohe that is occurring within Taranaki with the involvement of
the Council.
Recommended
That the Taranaki Regional Council:

The scoping study has been prepared as a desk-top study, and has not involved field work or site visits to record
new sites or assess present condition of previously recorded sites. Additionally, iwi have not been involved in

significance of sites to Māori. It is

There are eight streams/rivers where MALF has not been calculated through site specific investigations, so
the percent of the MALF allocated has been estimated using the NZ River Maps tool developed by NIWA. NZ
River Maps has calculated the estimates of environmental conditions across the entire New Zealand river
network, including flow
government policy changes, state of the
environment information, and other relevant information;
A series of workshops and meetings with Council staff, iwi and stakeholders, including
major consent holders, the three district councils, non-governmental organisations and
community groups, Department of Conservation, Heritage New Zealand and the
Taranaki District Health Board, were held in July and August 2016;
The preparation of a draft report to set out the Council’s preliminary findings
