Contact Energy Ltd holds two consents for the abstraction and use of water in
relation to SPS.
Water Permit 4455-1 allows the take and use of up to 19,440 cubic metres/day (225
L/s averaged over 15 minutes) of water on a continuous basis from the Patea River
for use of power stations. This permit was originally issued by
take, use, dam or divert any
water, unless the activity is expressly allowed for by resource consent or a rule in a
regional plan, or it falls within some particular categories set out in Section 14.
All of the consent holders covered by this report hold water abstraction consents. There
is a combined total of 18 consents of which STDC hold 15, CCWSL one, OWSL one and
NSSI one.
These consents were granted by the Council under Section 87 of the RMA and each
contains special conditions
with up to two 200 MW
generators, as an alternative to a second combined cycle plant. Consents 7785 and 7786 were
granted to provide for construction activities.

expressly allowed for by a resource consent or a rule in a regional plan, or it falls within some particular
categories set out in Section 14.

Maintaining sufficient volumes of water within streams and rivers to protect aquatic habitat is a primary
concern of the Council with respect to water permits.
STDC holds consent 5350-1 to dam and divert water around the Central landfill and into the headwaters of
the Waingongoro River. This permit was issued by the Council on 15 March 2000 under Section 87(d) of the
RMA. It is due to expire
