4.1 Ms M Webby, RoadSafe Taranaki, provided a
Ratapiko from the Manganui River through the Motukawa Race.
To allow the diversion of water from the Manganui River, a concrete weir was constructed across
the Manganui River downstream from Tariki Road. The weir is approximately 4 m high and was
constructed in 1927 (C. England pers. comm). The current consented take from the Manganui River
at the weir is 5.2 m3/s, with residual flows at the weir of 0.4 m3/s. However, when flow in the
Waitara River (at Bertrand Road gauge) falls below 5 m3/s, all of
0.84 per quadrat) due to the high energy
wave environment, lack of stable habitat and periodic sand inundation.
Sand deposition has been shown to have a profound effect on intertidal communities in Taranaki. The reef
sites at Mangati and Greenwood Road (north Taranaki) were particularly prone to periodic sand inundation.
Years of high sand accumulation at these sites resulted in lowered species richness and diversity. Trend
analysis indicates that there has been a significant

hydrological connection between the diversion and
the wetland? – If no, describe how you have come to this
conclusion.
☐
Will the diversion change or is it likely to change, the water
level range or hydrological function of the wetland? – If no,
describe how you have come to this conclusion.
Please note that when installing roads or other hard surfaces you may be diverting ground water from the
wetland, therefore a consent may be required.
