Iwi considerations
14. This memorandum and the associated recommendations are consistent with the Council’s policy for
the development of Māori capacity to contribute to decision-making processes (schedule 10 of the
Local Government Act 2002) as outlined in the adopted
Waitangi. Furthermore, schedule 10 of the Local Government Act 2002 requires the Council
to set out in its long-term plan any steps it intends to take to foster the development of Māori capacity to
contribute to the decision making processes over the period covered by the Plan.
There are eight recognised iwi in the region, Ngaa Rauru Kiitahi, Ngāti Ruanui, Ngāruahine, Taranaki Iwi, Te

The area of the proposed works at Weld Road headland is located within the Coastal Management
Area C. Under this coastal management area (open coast), it is identified as containing areas of high
amenity value (specific areas identified in Schedule 3). This is where the regionally significant surf
break is identified under Schedule 4 and is referred to in the LVEA. On the Coastal Plan maps 2023
the areas in question is not identified as having high natural
functions and Taranaki’s natural and physical
resources.
Commentary/Highlights
The main focus has been on completing the Coastal Plan review process. Work on the Freshwater and Land Plan continues
with assessments of minimum flows and allocation limits. Engagement with iwi through Wai Maori collaborative group and
engagement with other stakeholders.
