Executive summary
Methanex New Zealand Ltd (Methanex) operates methanol production facilities located at Motunui and
Waitara Valley, in the Manu, Waihi and Waitara River catchments. This report for the period July 2020 to
June 2021 describes the monitoring programme implemented by the Taranaki Regional Council (the
Council) to assess Methanex’s environmental and consent compliance performance during the period under
review. The report also details the results of the
27th report by the Taranaki Regional Council
(the Council) to be prepared for the monitoring programme in the Waitaha Stream catchment. Twelve
industrial premises were monitored under this programme during the year under review. The monitoring
reflects an on-going process of identifying and improving discharges into the catchment in a similar manner
to the management of those in the neighbouring Mangati Stream catchment.
Overall, a good level of environmental performance was achieved by the
Company to maintain structures, to take, divert
and discharge water, and to disturb the bed of Lake Ratapiko. This report for the period July 2020 to June
2021 describes the monitoring programme implemented by the Taranaki Regional Council (the Council) to
assess the Company’s environmental performance during the period under review, and the results and
environmental effects of their activities.
During the period under review, the Company demonstrated a high level of environmental
1.2.3 Relevant Background Landscape Assessments
There are a number of regional and district landscape assessments that have been undertaken
within the Taranaki Region, but only two that cover the area where the Scheme is located:
• New Plymouth District Landscape Assessment prepared in June 1995 for the New
Plymouth District Council by LA4 Landscape Architects; and
• Review of the New Plymouth District Landscape Assessment prepared in September
2006 for the New Plymouth District
Club, as well as watering
gardens and other general purposes at Pukekura Park. The consent was issued by the Taranaki Regional
Council (the Council) on 20 June 2017 and contains nine special conditions which set out the requirements
that TTR must satisfy. The consent has a maximum abstraction limit of 500 m3/day.
This report for the period July 2020 to June 2021 describes the monitoring programme carried out by the
Council to assess TTR’s environmental performance and level of compliance
take all
practicable steps to return the Motukawa HEPS to normal operation as soon as possible.
The consent holder shall notify the Chief Executive, Taranaki Regional Council (‘the Chief
Executive’) within 24 hours of the circumstances identified in (a) or (b) occurring at the
Motukawa HEPS.
2. On receipt of a requirement from the Chief Executive, the consent holder shall, within the
time specified in the requirement, supply the information required relating to the exercise

Executive summary
The Tawhiti Stream catchment, east of Hawera, is the location of several industries that
regionalised approach to
waste disposal and the site is now currently a potential option as the replacement regional landfill once the
facility at Colson Road, New Plymouth has reached capacity. The management of the delivery and operation
of the facility, and the associated consents were transferred to New Plymouth District Council (NPDC) during
the year under review. The Colson Road landfill closed to general waste in August 2019. However the use of
